Asbestos is a group of minerals that occur naturally as bundles of long, silky fibres. These minerals can be used to make products strong, long lasting and fire-resistant.
The properties of asbestos include strength, flexibility, and resistance to heat and chemicals, and make it ideal for use in construction materials, textiles and automotive parts. Asbestos containing materials can be found in a school environment. Asbestos is only a health hazard when it is friable (broken into fine fibres when crumbled, ground, drilled, etc.). Friable asbestos can be released into the air.
