Fire Drill Practise at Grindrod Elementary

Posted on 2026-10-22 15:33:36.31 +0000 UTC

Students and staff at Grindrod Elementary School recently participated in a fire drill, providing an opportunity to practise the procedures that help keep everyone safe in the event of an emergency.

When the fire alarm sounded, staff immediately put emergency procedures into action, organizing students for evacuation and guiding classes to their designated exits. Teachers and support staff brought attendance sheets and class lists, escorted students to the school's assembly area, and carefully accounted for every student. Once attendance was confirmed, staff reported their results to the principal or designate and remained ready to provide any additional support required until the drill was officially concluded.

The exercise demonstrated the calm, organized response that takes place whenever an emergency alarm sounds. Regular practice helps students and staff become familiar with procedures, ensuring they can respond quickly and confidently when needed.

School safety drills are an important part of emergency preparedness across School District No. 83. Each year, schools are required to conduct six fire drills, including three in the fall and three in the spring. Schools also participate in a variety of other emergency preparedness activities, including one Drop, Cover and Hold On (earthquake) drill, one lockdown drill, one hold and secure drill, and one first aid drill. Schools may also conduct a shelter-in-place drill as part of their emergency planning.

The recent fire drill at Grindrod Elementary is an example of each school's commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment and ensuring students know what to do in the event of an emergency. Through regular practice and preparation, students and staff continue to build the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively when safety matters most.
